Lazy J - J40

This was a real treat, Lazy J are a British boutique amp maker and it was lovely to have a go on an amp I would never be able to afford!

Essentially their take on a 60’s Fender with some tweaks, very well put together and sounding lovely.

There was an interesting problem with this one, the customer notced some very louds ‘cracks’ when playing at higher volumes and on the lower strings. It turned out that the Fane A60 speaker was damaged, my suspicion was a melted/damaged voice coil and as a result the cone was bottoming out in the magnet. A tale of always being careful on speaker selection, the amp is sold as 40W, the speaker was rated at 60W and the measured output was 76W!

After a chat with the customer my recommendation (as it always is!) was to put in a Celestion Creamback, the 75W version. After a few other tweaks to reduce noise (stop mouting resistors directly above tube sockets!) and a service it was sounding wonderful. Perhaps a personal preference but I prefer ceramic magnet drivers and the customer agreed with me on this upgrade.
