1975 Fender Champ

The Fender Champ is one of the best-known amps, so many famous guitarists have used them over the years. The previous versions (Tweed and Black panel) from the 1950’s and 60’s tend to get all the praise and an command huge amounts of money, however the 1970’s Silver panels seem to getting more interst.

I think this is an amazing sounding amp and was sad to see it go. The circuit is simple, components minimal and just three pots.

This one came in disassembled and had previously been worked on with cheap components. The main filter cap needed a replacement from the USA to be true to the original spec. A re-bias and new caps in the cathode bypass for each valve along with replacing the cheap components and hey presto - ready to make some sweet sounds.

This amp also suffering a common finding from Fender amps using the eyelet boards - wax/flux on the board can conduct electricity which can affect the functioning. 1.3V was on this one and so we needed to remove components and give it a good clean.

I’ll miss you dear friend.
